Winter Wheat
Comment on current growth stages Field conditions
Most crops showing little stem extension, but forward crops of Robigus, Nijinksy and especially Cordiale are at GS 30, and some Cordiale nearly GS31. 20 mm rainfall in last 14 days giving a local total of 40 mm for February. Lot of standing water in fields in low places and compacted areas, but crops look OK.
Main diseases Present Level and comment
Brown Rust Crops carrying significant levels a few weeks ago are now clean.
Mildew Low level in most crops but most obvious on older leaves in early sown Robigus and Cordiale.
Septoria tritici Present in all forward crops, but later sown are still clean. Older leaves only with low level on Robigus and Welford.
Yellow Rust None seen
Eyespot No ' true ' symptoms seen with typical lines of spores but there are yellow patches in crops of Robigus which are early season symptoms.

Main Pest problems Level and comment
Aphids aphids present in crops treated before 3rd week of October.
Frit fly None seen
Leatherjacket None seen
Opomyza None seen
Slugs Later crops in poor seedbeds are still being watched.
Wheat bulb fly None seen
Wireworm None seen
Other Gout Fly - moderate levels can be found in all crops sown before the end of September.
Main weed problems Level and comment
Blackgrass No new problem areas seen yet this year.
Meadow grasses Emerging in unsprayed fields.
Rye grass Low levels emerging. Some crops have been treated Peri or early Post emergence where spraying was delayed.

Others Post emergence herbicides being applied to earliest crops now, for annual meadow grass and broadleaf weeds.

Winter Barley
Comment on current growth stages Field conditions
Crops fully tillered and at leaf sheath erect stage, which coincides with timing for 1st PGR application. As wheat.
Main diseases Present Level and comment
Brown Rust None seen
Mildew Levels lower now than a few weeks ago but still on lower leaves of Carat and Pearl. Saffron and Flagon clean.
Net-blotch Reasonably high levels now in most crops, especially in Pearl, Carat and Saffron, but not considered a threat to yields at this stage.

Eyespot None seen
Rhynchosporium None seen
Other None seen
Main Pest problems Level and comment
Aphids Aphids present in crops treated in early autumn.
Leatherjacket None seen
Slugs No damage noticed this week.

Blackgrass As expected have problem areas in some fields with patches blackgrass coming through.

Rye grass Moderate - Low levels emerging.

Comment on current growth stages Field conditions
Crops starting to grow now and have some with flower buds visible. Crops that were very dense in the Autumn are more open now. Smaller crops only just at buds enclosed stage.

Phoma No reinfection seen.
