Report compiled by Farming Online from reports received from members of the Association of Independent Crop Consultants

Harvest decisions: for winter oilseed rape and winter barley now imminent. Desiccation of earliest winter oilseed rape expected in the next two weeks.

Winter wheat crops: in the main, are at the end of flowering. Predicted heat wave for next week may bring all crops closer to harvest than we would like.

Highlights

Winter Oilseed Rape
  • Nearing desiccation time.
Winter Wheat
  • Grain set started.
  • Drought stress obvious on lighter land.
  • Septoria remains low.
  • Aphid numbers low.
  • Blackgrass check uncontrolled areas for resistance.
Winter Barley
  • Crops beginning to turn.
  • Disease levels low.
Spring Beans
  • Pod set.
  • Bruchid beetle timing decision.
Spring Barley
  • Early sown crops at grain set.
Cross compliance
  • Make sure that 2m headlands are maintained where necessary.
Soil temperature
  • 12 deg.C and set to rise.

South East: All crops now at varying stages of pod fill. Crops of ES Alienor beginning to show yellowing pods and may be ready for desiccant in 10-14 days time.

Sclerotinia: no stem infection noted to date indicating successful fungicide programmes or more likely helpful weather.

Eastern Counties: Pat Turnbull reports that the recovery of some of the backward rape crops has been amazing. Of course yield is difficult to assess and we are going to have the problem of uneven maturity but they look much more promising than in March.

Sclerotinia: all treatments now completed.

East Midlands: Very variable but most well podded.

Sclerotinia: none seen yet.

West Midlands: Now starting to consider whether to use diquat or glyphosate for burning off.

Sclerotinia: no signs yet.

North East: Most crops lost all flower now and pod filling looks good.

Sclerotinia: all treatments now completed.

Winter Wheat

Flowering coming to an
end in most crops.

South East: Peter Cowlrick reports most crops now at watery ripe stages. Few late February sown crops now at ears emerging. Post ear emergence (T3) applications all been completed around 7 days ago. Gravelly soils beginning to dry out now with some leaf rolling evident by midday, otherwise most crops holding up well since rain around 10 days ago.

Brown rust: none seen.

Yellow rust: none seen.

Mildew: none active.

Septoria: in most crops top 3 leaves are largely free of any Septoria, but evident on lower leaves of most varieties.

Eyespot: no further development.

Fusarium: no signs yet.

Wheat blossom midge: most crops have not been treated this year and so far appears to only be low levels of larvae on developing grains (<10% of glumes/grains) vindicating no spray decisions.

Aphids: low levels of grain aphids now being found.

East Midlands: Malcolm Harrison reports most crops at GS 59+ with most forward at end of flowering. Recent rain extremely variable with 40 mm in one place and 5 mm just 2 miles away. Milling crops will be having their late nitrogen protein booster next week.

Mildew: confined to lower leaves.

Brown rust: none seen.

Yellow rust: more rust seen on Robigus where 1) spray was missed and 2) where too big a gap between sprays at emergence of final leaf 3 (T1) and full flag leaf emergence (T2). Also some seen on Oakley.

Septoria: leaves from flag to leaf 3, except where full flag leaf emergence (T2) application late. Post ear emergence (T3) applied to most crops.

Eyespot: levels low.

Wheat blossom midge: very few seen and no crops sprayed - even milling wheats.

West Midlands: Bryce Rham reports that majority of crops now flowering, very forward crops completed flowering. Crops enjoying the recent rains but I think it was too late for the very light land. Ground conditions would not want to get too much wetter, all field work completed now just hope for dry harvest.

Mildew: mildew still evident even where T1 (emergence of final leaf 3) and T2 (full flag leaf emergence) applied.

Brown rust: none seen.

Yellow rust: none seen.

Septoria: looks like a low disease year at the moment with most crops with leaf 1, 2 and 3 clean and leaf 4 with 2-3%. Even late sprayed T1 (emergence of final leaf 3) crops still look to be as clean.

Eyespot: low levels visible on forward Duxford and Humber.

Aphids: no aphicide used at post ear emergence (T3) due to low if non existent signs of aphids and no sign of any significant increase as yet.

Eastern Counties: Brendan Butterworth reports that majority of crops at mid-late flowering. Later drilled crops ate at the start of flowering. Topsoil is dry and large cracks are appearing in most fields. Light soils dry through and crops dying off on side hills and hill crests.

Mildew: majority now turned brown.

Brown rust: none seen.

Yellow rust: no further outbreaks.

Septoria: most crops have top three leaves clean.

Eyespot: no further development.

Fusarium ear blight: none seen yet. Most crops treated at post ear emergence (T3).

Orange wheat blossom midge: very low levels.

North East: Phillip Tuplin reports most crops at mid-late flowering.

Mildew: none seen.

Septoria: some lesions on oldest leaves, but generally crops are clean to leaf 4 and then only a low level.

Brown rust: none seen.

Yellow rust: no new infection seen.

Eyespot: no stem penetrating lesions been seen.

Ear diseases: no signs of Fusarium yet.

Aphids: low numbers in some crops.

Winter Barley

South East: All crops now at late grain fill with some earlier sown crops of Boost beginning to turn.

Eastern Counties: Most crops now finished flowering and remain clear of disease.

East Midlands: Crops now beginning to turn.

West Midlands: Crops visibly turning none knocked over as yet by the heavy rains over the last 10 days.

North East: Grain fill underway now. Carat at soft dough stage, Saffron, Retriever and the 6-rows just at end of flowering. Gate closed now.

Spring Beans

South: Crops now at 3-4 pod trusses set.

Downy mildew: disease dried up after fungicide applications.

Eastern Counties: Majority at 3-4 pod trusses set.

Bruchid beetle: is being treated from third flower truss/first pod visible assuming adequate temperature (20 deg. C) is reached.

Midlands: Now well into flower with forward crops reaching stage for bruchid sprays, usually with fungicide combined.

Bruchid beetle: with several days now above 20 degrees C. adults will soon be laying eggs on first pods.

Nationally: Early sown crops at grain set.
