Where DON was detected in grain (26% samples), levels ranged between 11 and 117 ppb. These levels are well below the legislative limit of 1500 ppb.

Latest: Wheat disease survey - Fusarium update 11/08/2010

Identification of the species responsible for the fusarium head blight symptoms identified on the survey are now complete. These have confirmed that F. poae was the predominant species responsible for symptoms (present in 52% of the samples surveyed). Nationally F.graminearum and F. culmorum were isolated in less than 10% of survey samples. See Fusarium pages for a breakdown of national and regional mycotoxin risks.

CropMonitor Live monitoring 2010 summary - Septoria and mildew 10/08/2010

Nationally, septoria severity was at its lowest level for several years. Within the Live Monitoring trials network, many sites reported only low to moderate disease pressure, but higher septoria levels were present at some locations, most notably in the West Midlands and in Kent. Mildew levels have been low all season and the only consistent threat in the Live Monitoring trials this year has been at the Harper Adams site.

CropMonitor Live monitoring 2010 summary - Rusts 10/08/2010

Yellow rust was the most dynamic disease in this year's Live Monitoring trials (with the exception of Romney Marsh), although the cold winter and late spring meant that it got off to a delayed start at many locations. In general the very susceptible varieties (Oakley, Robigus and Solstice) were affected most, but the more moderately-susceptible varieties had their share of disease at some sites, and none of resistant varieties escaped completely. Brown rust was found at only two locations this year: Essex and Caythorpe. Alchemy was affected at both sites, but other varieties were starting to show symptoms at Caythorpe.

Latest: Wheat disease survey - Fusarium update 28/07/2010

All 300 samples from the Defra winter wheat survey have now been assessed for diseases. A high proportion of these (63%) showed symptoms of fusarium ear infection. As last year, the majority of the symptoms were the blotch type, commonly associated with F. poae and F. langsethiae. Identification of the species responsible have been completed on 42% of samples with symptoms, confirming that F. poae is the predominant species. Nationally, F.graminearum and F. culmorum, which produce DON mycotoxin, are being isolated at low levels. See fusarium pages for a breakdown of national and regional toxin risks.

The Defra national oilseed rape and wheat disease surveys are now complete. Results will follow shortly.

Latest: Wheat disease survey - Fusarium update 20/07/2010

As of 19/07/2010, 231 of the 300 wheat crop samples have been assessed. Of these, 121 samples showed head blight symptoms. So far this year, as last year, the majority of the symptoms are the blotch type, commonly associated with F. poae and F. langsethiae. Early isolation results (36 samples) have confirmed that F. poae is currently the predominant species (35 samples). F.graminearum and F. culmorum are currently being found at low levels (1 and 2 samples respectively). At this very early stage of the survey, it would appear that levels of deoxynivalenol and zearalenone at harvest are likely to be low; although, as highlighted in previous years, the final toxin level/profile will depend on rainfall between now and harvest.

Latest: Wheat disease survey - Fusarium update 08/07/2010

The Defra winter wheat disease survey has now started as crops reach GS73-75. A total of 85 crops have been assessed for fusarium ear disease so far and 40 crops (47%) are showing FHB symptoms. Isolation work indicates that of the infected samples tested to date, all lesions were caused by F. poae.

Latest: Wheat live monitoring 08/07/2010

The final assessments have been completed on the Live Monitoring trials network this week as most plots have reached GS75.

CropMonitor Live monitoring 2010 summary - Rusts 08/07/2010

Yellow rust has certainly been the most dynamic disease in this year's Live Monitoring trials (with the exception of Romney Marsh), although the cold winter and late spring meant that it got off to a delayed start at many locations. In general the very susceptible varieties (Oakley, Robigus and Solstice) have been affected most, but the more moderately-susceptible varieties have had their share of disease at some sites, and none of resistant varieties have escaped completely. Brown rust was found at only two locations this year: Essex and Caythorpe. Alchemy was affected at both sites, but other varieties were starting to show symptoms at Caythorpe. Any favourable weather over the remaining growing season is likely to see a few symptoms appearing in more varieties, but fortunately no real threat to crops in which fungicide protection has been maintained.

CropMonitor Live monitoring 2010 summary - Septoria and mildew 08/07/2010

Nationally, septoria severity is at its lowest level for several years. Within the Live Monitoring trials network, many sites reported only low to moderate disease pressure, but higher septoria levels were present at some locations, most notably in the West Midlands and in Kent. Little change in disease pressure is expected before the end of the growing season. Mildew levels have been low all season and the only consistent threat in the Live Monitoring trials this year has been at the Harper Adams site.

Latest: Septoria and mildew on wheat 28/06/2010

In general, progress of S. tritici remains slow and symptoms tend to be predominately on the lower leaf layers. With little or no rain in most areas over the last week, the threat from septoria is not increasing and the overall risk this year is typically low. Mildew is now reported as absent from most of the Live Monitoring trials although it is hanging on in some of the more westerly sites. Mildew risk for the final part of the season is therefore low for most regions.

Latest: Rusts on wheat 28/06/2010

Yellow rust is now widely reported at moderate or severe levels in the most susceptible varieties, notably Robigus and Oakley, and is sufficiently active still to be increasing in incidence or severity at a number of sites. The yellow rust risk continues to be high in the most susceptible varieties, and moderate in many others, but higher temperatures will hopefully now start to limit further development. There were no new observations of brown rust this week, leaving Caythorpe as the only Live Monitoring site at which the disease is active, at moderate levels in the very susceptible variety Alchemy. With most crops now well protected with fungicides the brown rust risk this year remains very slight, although a low level of the disease could still appear in susceptible varieties before the start of senescence.

Latest: wheat crop development 28/06/2010

Most crops have now finished flowering and grain fill is underway.

Latest: wheat crop development 22/06/2010

Many winter wheat crops have now reached or are near the end of flowering, and most have now received their final fungicide applications.

Tan spot confirmed in plots at Boxworth 22/06/2010

Tan spot has been confirmed in the live monitor plots at Boxworth (mostly on leaf 2). Low levels of the disease have been found on all varieties with highest levels on Solstice, Scout, Duxford, Cordiale, Battalion, Ambrosia and Einstein.

Latest: Fusarium head blight 22/06/2010

Levels of stem base disease caused by Microdochium spp. are lower than at the equivalent point in any of the last three years. Fusarium species responsible for the production of DON (deoxynivalenol) mycotoxin are being found on the upper leaf layers. Wet humid conditions during crop flowering favour development of fusarium infections on the ears. Recent warm dry weather across much of the country over the flowering period will have reduced the chances of head blight infections developing.

Latest: Rusts on wheat 22/06/2010

Yellow rust continues to spread to new varieties at some sites, and increase in severity at others. The worst affected sites remain Boxworth and Caythorpe, with symptoms reported on all four of the most resistant varieties at Caythorpe. Caythorpe was once again the only Live Monitoring site at which brown rust was found this week, with moderate levels in Alchemy. Some further development of the disease is still likely in untreated susceptible varieties, but with most crops now well protected with fungicides the disease risk this year remains low.

Latest: Septoria and mildew on wheat 22/06/2010

Septoria levels continue to vary between locations, but still with a trend towards higher levels in the south and west, and lower levels in the east. Overall though the septoria risk this year is moderate, with only slow disease progress onto the upper leaf layers. Mildew is still active at Callow, Harper Adams and Morley but is increasing only very slowly. In general the disease is present mainly on the older leaves, and the overall threat from mildew is therefore low.

Most winter oilseed rape crops have now reached pod development.

Latest: oilseed rape diseases 22/06/2010

The Defra national oilseed rape disease survey started this week. Updates on disease levels will follow shortly.

Latest: oilseed rape crop development 07/06/2010

Most crops have finished flowering and are there are reports of high levels of set pods.

Latest: wheat crop development 07/06/2010

With increasing temperatures over the last few days, most wheat crops are moving rapidly towards and into ear emergence.

Latest: Low levels of septoria and mildew on wheat 07/06/2010

Some sites reported an increase in septoria symptoms and others a decrease this week. In many cases visible septoria remains at low levels on the upper leaf layers, with less than 2% of leaf 2. The septoria risk for the majority of varieties remains moderate or low at all sites. Mildew risks continue to be low. The disease is most active in the west of the country but in most cases is not increasing. At the more easterly sites mildew remains absent.

Latest: Rusts starting to increase on wheat 07/06/2010

Yellow rust increased in severity and incidence at number of sites this week. Oakley, Robigus and Solstice are the most widely and severely affected varieties. Viscount, Einstein and Ambrosia also have symptoms at a number of sites. There are reports on Claire at Boxworth and in Scout at Morley, both of which are currently considered highly resistant varieties. Assessments next week should confirm whether the disease is developing in these two varieties, in the meantime these observations should be treated with caution. However, as a precaution, all wheat varieties that are unprotected against yellow rust should be monitored carefully. First reports of brown rust were from the Caythorpe site this week with low levels recorded in moderately-susceptible Einstein and resistant Viscount coinciding with the first observations of yellow rust in the same two varieties at this site. Assessments next week should clarify the situation and until then the report should be treated with caution.

Latest: fusarium stem base disease 03/06/2010

Levels of stem base disease caused by Microdochium spp. are lower than at the equivalent point in any of the last three years. Fusarium species responsible for the production of DON (deoxynivalenol) mycotoxin are being found on the upper leaf layers. Development of fusarium infections on the ears will depend on weather conditions over the next few weeks, particularly during crop flowering when wet humid conditions will be most favourable.

Latest: wheat crop development 03/06/2010

Most crops are at growth stages between flag leaf emergence and ear emergence. Crops are reported to be showing signs of drought stress in all areas of the country.

Latest: wheat diseases 03/06/2010

S. tritici continues to vary in severity according to location, with a tendency for the lowest levels to be in the east. With little or no rainfall in many areas, septoria pressure is unchanged or decreasing at most sites and the overall moderate to low disease risk is not expected to increase (see also the latest Septoria Risk Forecast). Yellow rust has affected the majority of susceptible varieties at Boxworth but elsewhere it is still restricted to Oakley, Robigus and Solstice. The Romney Marsh, Essex and Seal Hayne trials remain free from yellow rust and it has not been recorded at York since early May. There are still no reports of brown rust at the Live Monitoring sites. Conditions could become more favourable for the disease during June, but with such a low starting point the risk even to susceptible varieties continues to be moderate to low. The incidence of mildew continues to be low with reports suggesting that the disease is most prevalent in the Midlands and West.

Latest: oilseed rape diseases 03/06/2010

The extended flowering period has increased the period of susceptibility to sclerotinia and temperatures are favourable for spore production. However, flowering in most crops is now coming to an end and the current hot dry weather will ameliorate risks due to reduced petal sticking.

Latest: Septoria risk forecast update 03/06/2010

The septoria risk forecast has been updated based on weather data up to the middle of May. Predicted final disease levels in treated crops are lower than at the first forecast in all but one area of the country (South Lincs) with an average reduction in disease of 0.4% leaf area affected across the regions. Final disease levels are predicted to range between 0.1% and 3.6% leaf 2 area affected with crops in the three regions in the south west of the country the only ones predicted to exceed an average of 2% leaf 2 area affected.

Latest: oilseed rape crop development 03/06/2010

Most crops are now at late flowering after the longest flowering period for many years (6 weeks or more).

Latest: wheat crop development 22/05/2010

Crops at the thirteen monitoring sites are reaching flag leaf emergence (GS37-39) with boots swelling in the most forward crops.

Latest: wheat diseases 22/05/2010

Septoria remains the most prevalent disease although levels remain low particularly in the east. Yellow rust has been recorded at 7 sites so far, and though severe at Caythorpe and increasing at Boxworth is now absent from 3 previous sites. Oakley and Robigus are the most severely affected. Brown rust continues to be absent from crops in the monitoring network but current hot weather may increase risk. Mildew incidence is regionalised with only 4 sites affected (all in the West Midlands). Risk of all diseases except brown rust will remain low while the hot, dry weather continues.

Latest: oilseed rape crop development 22/05/2010

The majority of oilseed rape crops are still in full or late flower making this one of the most extended flowering periods for many years. Yield potential is predicted to be good as a result.

Latest: oilseed rape diseases 22/05/2010

Levels of light leaf spot remain low with the disease mainly evident in the south east. The extended flowering period has increased the period of susceptibility to sclerotinia and temperatures are now favourable for spore production. However, the current dry weather will ameliorate risk due to reduced petal sticking.

Latest: bean downy mildew 22/05/2010

The current hot dry weather does not favour the development of bean downy mildew and risks across the country are currently low.

Latest from the regions - oilseed rape diseases 05/05/2010

Most oilseed rape crops are now flowering and growers are making decisions about sclerotinia disease control. Favourable conditions for the disease are warmer temperatures and rainfall. Light leaf spot levels continue to be low.

Latest from the regions - pollen beetle 05/05/2010

Several regions report continuing high levels of pollen beetle in oilseed rape but the risks are now declining as crops come well into flower.

Latest from the wheat monitoring network 05/05/2010

Most sites have reached or passed GS31. Septoria continues to be the most widespread disease within the network. Disease risk is now increasing from the low risk situation at the beginning of the spring with disease levels typically moderate to severe in the untreated trial crops north and west and slight to moderate in the east. Yellow rust is present at three sites but only on the highly susceptible cultivar Oakley. There are no reports of brown rust on the network on no significant reports of of the disease on farm. Mildew is present at three sites but levels do not appear to be increasing significantly.
