Potatoes are susceptible to over 30 bacterial,
fungal and virus diseases and 12 common disorders. Between 1993 and 2000, Defra funded the first comprehensive
potato survey in England and Wales to monitor changes in the relative importance of these diseases
and to identify any new disease risks. The objectives were to measure the incidence and severity of disease,
to assess seasonal variation and to monitor the influence of pesticide use and husbandry factors. Five assessments were made
throughout the year; on the seed tubers, in crops in the field in spring as plants met along rows and in summer
just prior to crop senescence, on harvested tubers and on tubers in store. The potato survey is no longer being undertaken
