Before planting, fifty tubers from each seed stock were assessed for
internal and external diseases and blemishes. Seed tuber assessments were first undertaken
in 1996.
Incidence and severity of tuber surface diseases were at similar levels to those found in 1999.
Silver scurf was again the most severe and common of tuber surface
diseases, being recorded on 99% of all stocks assessed. Internal rust spot was the most common internal blemish.
As in 1999, tuber blight was not recorded in seed stocks.
As in 1998 and 1999, skin spot was recorded in all regions except the South East.
Powdery scab was not recorded on crops in the South West % Wales and was highest in the South East where 50% of stocks were affected.
Severity of powdery scab was only 0.1% surface area affected.
