2002/2003 SURVEY: AUTUMN ASSESSMENT 2002
Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed visually for symptoms of disease at mid leaf production.
 
  • Phoma leaf spot (96.8% crops and 49.3% plants affected) was the most common disease, and was encountered in all regions.


  • Downy mildew incidence (83.0% crops and 30.6% plants affected) was higher than in the previous year. Downy mildew was the second most common disease and, with the exception of Wales, was also recorded in all regions surveyed.


  • Incidence and severity of both white leaf spot and light leaf spot were low and were only recorded in the Midlands & Western region.


  • Incidence of alternaria leaf spot (17.0% crops and 2.2% plants affected) was lower than in the previous year. The highest incidence of 50.0% crops and 7.1% plants affected was recorded in the Northern region.


  • Powdery mildew was recorded in the East and South West only. Botrytis was recorded in the East, South West and Wales only. Ring spot was not recorded in any region.
