2004/2005 SURVEY: AUTUMN ASSESSMENT 2004

Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed visually for symptoms of disease at mid leaf production.
 
  • The incidence of Phoma leaf spot was higher than in the previous year with 97.0% crops and 52.1% plants affected, compared to 70.0% and 24.2% respectively. Phoma leaf spot was recorded in all regions. With the exception of the Northern region (86.4% crops were affected), all crops were affected in all regions.
  • Alternaria was recorded in all regions, with incidence very similar to the previous year (45.0% crops and 5.6% plants affected). Severity of the disease was low, with only trace levels found in all crops.
  • Downy mildew incidence (37.0% crops and 7.3% plants affected) was lower than in the previous year when 74.0% crops and 18.6% plants were affected. Downy mildew was found in all regions except the South West.
  • Powdery mildew was found in the East and Midlands & West regions only. National incidence was lower than last year with 2.0% crops affected, compared to 12.0% crops.
  • Light leaf spot was only recorded in the Northern region (13.6% crops affected).
  • White leaf spot was only recorded in the South Eastern region (6.7% crops affected).
  • Ring spot and Botrytis were not found in any region.
