2005/2006 SURVEY: AUTUMN ASSESSMENT 2005

Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed visually for symptoms of disease at mid leaf production.
 
  • The incidence of crops affected by Phoma leaf spot was the same as the previous year with 97.0% affected, however, the proportion of plants affected was lower than in the previous year with 37.7% affected, compared to 52.1%. Phoma was found in all regions.
  • Light leaf spot was recorded in the Northern and Eastern regions only. National incidence was higher than in the previous year with 7.0% crops and 1.3% plants affected, compared with 3.0% crops and 0.3% plants.
  • Alternaria was recorded in all regions except the Northern region. The incidence of Alternaria leaf spot was markedly lower than in the previous year with 16.0% crops and 1.3% plants affected, compared to 45.0% and 5.6% respectively. Severity of the disease was low, with only trace levels found. The highest incidence was recorded in the Midlands & West region where 43.8% crops were affected.
  • Incidence of Downy mildew (28.0% crops and 3.5% plants affected) was lower than in the previous year when 37.0% crops and 7.3% plants were affected. Downy mildew was found in all regions.
  • Powdery mildew was found in the Eastern and Northern regions only. National incidence was higher than last year with 4.0% crops and 1.7% plants affected, compared to 2.0% crops and 0.5% plants.
  • Ring spot, Botrytis and white leaf spot were not found in any surveyed crop.
