2006/2007 SURVEY: AUTUMN ASSESSMENT 2006
Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed
visually for symptoms of disease at mid leaf production.
- The incidence of crops affected by Phoma leaf spot was the lower than the previous year with 90.0%
affected compared to 97.0%. The proportion of plants affected was also lower than in the previous year with 36.0%
affected, compared to 37.7%. Phoma was found in all regions.
- Light leaf spot was recorded in the Northern and Eastern regions only. National incidence
was the same as the previous year with 7.0% crops affected. The proportion of plants affected
was also similar with 1.2% affected compared with 1.3% last year.
- Alternaria was recorded in all regions except the Midlands & West. The incidence of Alternaria
leaf spot was the same as the previous year with 16.0% crops affected. The highest incidence were recorded in
the South Eastern and Eastern regions where 25.0% and 23.2% crops were affected respectively. Severity of the disease was low, with only trace levels found.
- The incidence of crops affected with Downy mildew was lower than in the previous year with 22.0% affected
compared with 28.0%. The highest incidence of crops affected was recorded in the Eastern region (28.2%) and the lowest in
the Midlands & West (12.5%). Downy mildew was present in all regions.
- Powdery mildew was found in all regions except the North. National incidence was
higher than last year with 10.0% crops and 2.7% plants affected, compared to 4.0% crops and 1.7%
plants. The severity of powdery mildew was also lower this year with only trace levels found, compared with 0.1%
leaf area affected last year.
- Ring spot, Botrytis and white leaf spot were not found in any surveyed crop.
