Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed
visually for symptoms of disease at early stem extension.
Phoma leaf spot (90.4% crops and 42.9% plants affected) was the most common disease, and was
encountered in all regions surveyed.
Incidence of white leaf spot (20.2% crops and 5.7% plants affected) was higher than in the
previous year, particularly in the Midlands & Western region where 94.7% crops were affected
compared to 35.0% in 2002.
Incidence of Alternaria at 11.7% crops and 1.2% plants affected was lower than
in the previous year (30.3% crops and 3.7% plants were affected in 2002).
Powdery mildew and ring spot were not found in any region. Powdery mildew has not been recorded
in any spring crop since 1997.
Botrytis was recorded in the Eastern region only.
Light leaf spot was recorded in 38.3% crops and 11.5% plants which was slightly lower than in
the previous year. The highest incidences were recorded in the Northern and the South Western regions.
