- Phoma leaf spot was the disease most commonly found in the spring (98.0% crops and 45.4% plants
affected), and was found in all regions surveyed. Incidence within crops was slightly lower than
last year with 45.4% plants affected compared to 63.7% plants affected in 2004. Regional incidence followed
trends seen in previous years surveys, with lower incidence in the North.
- The mean national incidence of 21.4% crops affected with light leaf spot was the same as in 2004
(21.6%). The incidence of plants affected was slightly lower, with 1.8% plants affected compared to
3.2% in 2004. This was the lowest incidence recorded in the survey to date. Regional trends in incidence
of light leaf spot also followed those seen in previous seasons, with the highest incidence seen in
the North and the South west.
- Incidence of downy mildew was lower than recorded in the previous spring (2.2% plants affected in
2005 compared to 12.5% in 2004). This continues a decreasing trend evident over the past 2 seasons
following high incidence in 2002.
- Incidence of dark pod spot was lower than seen in 2005 with 12.2% crops and 1.2% plants affected
compared to 35.1% crops and 2.7% plants in 2004. Dark pod spot was found in crops from all regions
surveyed, with the exception of the South East
- Powdery mildew was recorded in the East only, at low incidence of 4.9% crops and 0.2%
plants affected. White leaf spot, ring spot and Botrytis were not found in any crops surveyed
in spring 2005.
