2006/2007 SURVEY: SPRING ASSESSMENT 2007
Twenty five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed visually for symptoms of disease in the spring.
- Phoma leaf spot was the most commonly found disease in the spring (94.7% crops affected). The highest incidence was recorded in the Midlands & West where 100% of crops surveyed were affected. This was closely followed by the East (97.1% crops affected) and the South East (93.8% crops affected). Incidence within crops was slightly lower than last year with 36.3% plants affected compared to 42.1%. The trend in regional incidence was similar to previous years with the lowest incidence being recorded in the North and South West regions.
- The national incidence of light leaf spot was markedly higher than last year with 39.4% crops affected compared to 14% crops affected. Incidence this year was the highest recorded since 2003 (when a similar incidence of 38.9% crops affected was recorded). Regional trends of light leaf spot incidence are consistent with previous years - the highest incidence was recorded in the North and South West regions
- Alternaria leaf spot (9.6% crops and 0.5% plants affected) was found at similar low levels to last year (9.0% crops and 0.6% plants affected). Alternaria leaf spot was recorded in the East, Midlands & West and South East regions only.
- National incidence of downy mildew was slightly lower than last year (16.0% crops affected compared to 21% crops affected), continuing a downward trend recorded since 2002. Downy mildew was recorded in all regions except the South West.
- Powdery midlew was recorded at low incidence and was found in the Midlands & West and South East regions only.
- White leaf spot was recorded in the East region only at 2.9% crops and 0.1% plants affected.
- Ring ring spot and Botrytis were not recorded in any region in the survey. Ring spot was last recorded on the leaves in the spring in 2002, whilst Botrytis was last recorded on the leaves in the spring in 2003.
