2002/2003 SURVEY: SUMMER ASSESSMENT 2003
Stems and pods of twenty-five plants from each surveyed crop were assessed visually at pod ripening for symptoms of disease.

  • Club root was found only in the Midlands & West. This is the first time club root has been found in any region since 1993.

  • The incidence of phoma on the stems (69.5% plants affected) was higher than levels seen in 2002 (52.9% plants affected) and continues the trend of increasing incidence since 2000.

  • Incidence of powdery mildew on the pods, at 42.3% pods affected, was significantly higher than in 2002 (18.1% pods affected), and was the highest recorded since the survey began. Powdery mildew was recorded in all regions except the North and Wales.

  • White leaf spot and Sclerotinia were not recorded on pods in any region, and downy mildew was not recorded on stems from any region. Downy mildew on the stems has not been recorded in the survey since 1991.

  • On the pods, phoma, Botrytis and ring spot were only found in the Eastern and Midlands & West regions.
