Live monitoring of fusarium stem base diseases of wheat (2004)
As part of the Defra CropMonitor project, which involves live monitoring of a network of winter wheat trials
across the country, seven trial plots of cultivar Consort were monitored each week for incidence of fusarium
stem base diseases. In addition, plots of Claire, Malacca and Robigus at the same sites were sampled at GS 32/37 and again at GS75.
Isolations were made from plants showing symptoms to identify which
species of fusarium were involved. Isolations were carried out until the crop reached growth stage 65.
On Consort:
- Levels of Fusarium spp. and Microdochium nivale were generally moderate
- M. nivale was the predominant species at all sites except Suffolk
- Fusarium spp., mainly F. culmorum, are present on the stem base at all sites
