Live monitoring of Yellow rust using trap nurseries 2004

The aim of this project, which is undertaken by NIAB, is to monitor yellow rust risk around the country as the season progresses, and to get an up to the minute indication of which races are threatening wheat varieties in different areas.

Yellow rust was only found in the Cambridge trap nursery. The races present
were the 'Brigadier' type, the 'Madrigal race' and the 'Oxbow race'.

The nurseries, consisting of plots of wheat varieties without fungicide treatment, are located at 10 sites around the country. The varieties, many of which are no longer grown commercially, have been chosen to indicate which yellow rust races are present at each site. They include some extremely susceptible varieties that are vulnerable to infection by any races of yellow rust. These will pick up rust earlier in the season before it spreads to other varieties.
