Live monitoring of Yellow rust and brown rust using trap nurseries 2006

Rust trap nurseries have been set up at five sites in the East of England, to monitor the development of yellow rust and brown rust and to get an indication of which races are threatening wheat varieties this season.

The trap nurseries, consist of plots of wheat varieties without fungicide treatment. The varieties, many of which are no longer grown commercially, are chosen to act as indicators of which rust races are present at each site. They include some extremely susceptible varieties that are vulnerable to infection by any races of rust. These are used to pick up rust early in the season before it spreads to other varieties.

During the season, the progress of yellow rust and brown rust is being reported on the NIAB web site. Nurseries at Riseholme, Risby and Maldon are managed by Nickerson (UK) Ltd.
